Sonim Technologies Rugged Smartphones To Be Used In U.S. Army Combat Training
Sonim model XP6 LTE ultra-rugged Android devices and Cisco Instant Connect selected for next-generation push-to-talk design
SAN MATEO, Calif., May 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Sonim Technologies, maker of the world's toughest smartphones for use in extreme work environments and Cisco the worldwide leader in IT, today announced that Sonim's ultra-rugged XP6 LTE Android smartphones using Cisco Instant Connect software have been selected by Northrop Grumman to provide next-generation LTE mobile-communications capabilities for soldiers at key U.S. Army combat training centers.
Under procurement contracts with prime contractor Northrop Grumman, Sonim will supply XP6 smartphones along with Cisco Instant Connect software to the Army's Combat Training Center as the mobile-voice capability in support of live training by soldiers at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin in California and Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk in Louisiana.
Sonim's XP6 smartphones was selected based on more than 22-hours of LTE-based talk time, extreme durability in hot, dusty and wet environments, visibility under direct sunlight, support for a wide range of Android applications and industrial-grade accessories. Northrop Grumman chose Sonim after an extensive review of consumer off-the-shelf mobile phone technologies.
"As an American company based in the Silicon Valley, Sonim is proud to do its part to support our nation's armed services," said Robert Escalle, the company's Senior Director of Public Safety and Defense. "We are very proud to be selected by Northrop Grumman and to be able to provide the world's toughest, most durable smartphones to the world's best fighting force."
Sonim's smartphones are built specifically to withstand the rigors faced by men and women serving in the military, as well as those who work in industries such as construction, oil and gas, logging, agriculture and public safety.
The XP6 surpasses the company's set of Rugged Performance Standards (RPS), 12 benchmarks of endurance that go beyond basic MIL-SPEC and meet IP68 and IP69 certifications.
Rugged features of the XP6 include an extra-loud speaker with 100+ decibels of audio output; noise cancellation; a powerful 4,800-milliamp, dual-cell battery, and a display screen that can be viewed under direct sunlight, making far superior to traditional, consumer-grade smartphones. What's more, the Sonim XP6 is fully water submersible and able to withstand drops of six feet or more onto solid surfaces –features that are critical for everyone working outdoors.
And, in addition to its touch screen, the XP6 was purpose-built to provide a numeric keypad for outdoor work, providing the best choice for those making the transition from Private Mobile Radio (PMR) devices.
Sonim smartphones also have a robust suite of industrial-grade accessories, such as remote speaker microphones, vehicle kits, and accessories that meet intrinsically safe requirements. The Sonim XP6 is available nationwide at AT&T.
Cisco's Instant Connect push to talk software was also chosen by Northrop Grumman. The software allows for point to point push to talk calling, user priority with audio pre-emption, talker ID history, scan virtual talk groups, mapping and online user presence. Users now have a next generation push to talk experience that outperforms typical two-way radios giving users more information to communicate effectively.
